Asbestos in the EU
The EU have had a directive on their books for a couple of years urging EU member states to rid themselves of asbestos within their countries.
Members urge the EU to conduct an impact assessment and cost benefit analysis of the possibility of establishing action plans for the safe removal of asbestos from public buildings and buildings providing services which require regular public access by 2028, and to provide information and guidelines to encourage private house owners to effectively audit and risk-assess their premises for asbestos-containing materials (ACMs).
Further, the all-party parliamentary committee on health and Safety, is urging that (among other things);
- All asbestos is removed from the UK by 2036
- All pre 2000 buildings (not domestic) should have a survey and asbestos management plan
- This information should be supplied to the HSE and the HSE keep a register of these properties
- All domestic properties will need a survey for asbestos before being sold
