What is the greatest threat to our health whilst at work? How dangerous is asbestos?
If you look at causes of death which are work related, then there is no greater risk than that posed by asbestos. Around 1700 people die per year on the UK’s Roads, a figure which has diminished over time. Deaths in the workplace are around 245 per year currently. This year almost 5000 people will die in the UK (in excess of 110,000 worldwide according to the WHO) as a result of historical exposure to asbestos, the majority of which was probably in the workplace. That figure has been increasing over recent years.
So is asbestos exposure still a threat? It certainly is and for these reasons;
- Lack of awareness of the problem
- Lack of training
- Lack of up to date asbestos information (surveys)
- Lack of management of asbestos in building
In a recent survey by the government it was confirmed that 85% of UK schools still contain asbestos. The problem isn’t getting worse but its barely getting better. It is time to educate our children, tradesmen and property owners as to the reality of this hidden killer.
