The product generally contains up to 5% Amosite (brown) asbestos in the product which acts as a filler, although not all Bakelite products contain asbestos. Some contain wood.

Leo Baekeland often considered the father of the plastics industry died in 1944 and is buried in Sleepy Hollow in New York

Bakelite products are treated as a low risk and safe if not disturbed.

Always label and manage these products. Remember there is no safe exposure level to asbestos.
